1. How do I get a Nevada license from state to state?
 

In order to transfer a license to Nevada the candidate must have a current license in another state. This license must be in good standing and the applicant must prove they have passed a National Written exam. If the candidate has not taken a National Written exam they must take the exam prior to obtaining a license in Nevada.

2. How do I prove I am current and that I have passed the national exam?
  The Candidate must contact the state where they are currently licensed in. Request for a letter of certification to be sent to the Nevada State Board showing you are current. If they have taken the National written exam in a different state then they must have that state send a letter of certification showing passing of the National written exam. Not all states give the National exam, so you must contact your State Board to see if their state exam is a certified National Written exam.
 
3. What if I did not take the National exam in my state?
  If the candidate did not take a National Written exam in any of the states where they have held a license then they will be required to take the National written exam in Nevada. The National written exam is required by Nevada law in order to receive a license in this state. NRS 644.310.
 
4. How do I get an application?
 

If a candidate holds a current license in another state they will need to fill out an “Application Request Form” submit this with a $15.00 fee.

Our office can mail the form, the candidate can stop by the office to pick one up or go to the forms tab on our web site at http://cosmetology.nv.gov.
 
5. What if I have training from another country, how do I get a license in Nevada?
 

The Candidate will need to provide the Nevada State Board with the original documents along with a translation by the District Court in Nevada if, documents are not in English. The following documents are needed:

 

·         Proof of training must be on letterhead/ stationary. It must be signed and notarized or there must be an original seal on the document.
It must list out the subjects that were taken and the number of hours for each subject
.

·         Proof of licensing such as current license and/or a letter from the agency/authority if such licensing exists.

·         Proof of 4 years salon work experience is to be completed by the owner or manager. It cannot be completed by the candidate or a family member, It must show starting and ending dates (mm/dd/yy), job title, phase of experience or occupation held. The form must be properly signed and notarized. There cannot be any alterations, corrections or changes to the form or it will not be acceptable.

·         If self-employed, you need to provide Federal tax forms or equivalent, letter from tax person/bookkeeper verifying type of work, starting and ending date, salon name and address; on stationary, signed and notarized.

·         Proof of name changes such as marriage certification, divorce decree or any legal court documents.

·         Proof of age such as a copy of birth certificate, current pictured I.D., or current passport.

·         Proof of successful completion of 10th grade. Affidavit included in application once it is given.
 

6. What if I don’t have a current license, how do I renew it in Nevada if it expired in my state?
  To receive reciprocity in Nevada you must have a current license in good standing in at least one state. (NRS 644.310) (NAC644.0536).
 
7. What if I can’t prove any work experience or I don’t have any?
  If the candidate cannot prove any previous work experience they must get verification from the State Board where the hours were completed. The verification must list all subjects taken and the number of hours per subject. Documents from out of state schools will not be accepted. Validation must come from a state level governing agency, such as Board of Cosmetology, Post-Secondary or the Board of Education.
 
8. What if I finished beauty school in another state but I haven’t tested for a license. How do I test in Nevada to get my license there instead?
  The candidate must get verification from the State Board where you completed your school hours, listing all subjects taken and the number of hours per subject. Documents from out of state schools will not be accepted. Validation must come from a state level governing agency, such as Board of Cosmetology, Post-Secondary or the Board of Education. Once hours are approved and accepted, the candidate will receive an application or credit to return to school if they do not have the required number of hours for Nevada.
 
9. How many hours does Nevada require for a license?

10. How do I renew my expired Nevada license?
  The licensee must contact the Nevada State Board for the correct amount of late fees. A late fee of $20 for each month past June 30, 2006 of every odd year or fraction thereof is assessed. After 4 years of not renewing the licensee is required to take an examination consisting of the National Written and National Practical exam in order to reinstate and restore your license.
 
11. I have a license in Nevada but I’m moving to another state, what do I need?
  The licensee must contact the State Board where they are moving to find out how to get a license there. Most states require the previous State Board to send a letter of certification. The licensee will need a letter of certification sent, They must complete the “Certification Request Form” which is a $10 fee. 12. How do I open a school in Nevada?
  Contact the Nevada State Board to receive a law book and school application which includes a checklist of what is needed to open a beauty school in Nevada. They will need to come before the board to submit their application and receive approval.
 

 

SALON

What if I want to open a salon, what is required for licensing?

  The owner will need to complete an “Establishment Application” which can be picked up in person at our offices, our office can mail the form or go to the forms tab on our web site, cosmetology.nv.gov.The application has all the NAC regulations required to open a salon. There is a $200 application fee and a $15 first inspection fee to be submitted with the completed application.(NRS 644.340).
 
2. Who can own and operate a cosmetology salon establishment?
  Anyone may own a salon establishment, but it must be operated or managed by a Nevada licensee. This individual is called the cosmetologist-in-charge or in-charge-person. The designated individual must be licensed to cover all the services to be rendered within the salon. (NRS 644.370) (NAC644.037).
 
3. What if the salon ownership is a corporation, what papers are needed?
  If a corporation owns the salon the “Articles of Incorporation” must be submitted with the establishment application. The Articles of Incorporation must have the certificate number from the Secretary of State’s office.
 
4. How long does it take to obtain a salon license?
  If all requirements are met and the application has been processed, licensing can be accomplished within 5 to 7 business days via telephone and mailing processes.
 
5. Can I open a cosmetology salon establishment out of my private residence or home?
  YYes, cosmetology may be practiced in private residences only when the rooms used for the practice are completely separate from any rooms used for living quarters. The rooms used for the practice must be completely and permanently sealed off from the living quarters so that the only entrances to and exits from that portion of the residence used for the practice of cosmetology are from the street. A room used in a private residence for the practice of cosmetology must meet all requirements for cosmetological establishment in NAC 644.310 to 644.385, inclusive, and must:
 
  a) Have a ceiling that is not less than 8 feet in height;
  b) Be equipped to give proper service to clients;
  c) Have toilets which are separate from any toilets used by residents.
  d) Have a sign outside of the building denoting the name of the cosmetological establishment.
 
  A private residence in which cosmetology is practiced must be located in a geographical area in which the practice of cosmetology is allowed by local zoning ordinances. If the private residence is not located in such an area, the owner must receive a variance from the appropriate local governing body before applying to the Nevada State Board for a license for the cosmetological establishment and a copy of the variance must be submitted with Establishment Application. (NAC 644.375).
 
6. What do I need if there are changes made to the salon name, ownership or location?
  The owner will need to complete a new “Establishment Application”, submit a fee of $215 to the Nevada State Board. A new salon establishment license must be issued in order to operate under any change re: salon name, ownership, addition or deletion of services, or location change, prior to the change. (NRS 644.340) (NRS 644.345.1 & 2).
